What it actually means
The umbrella discipline of generating evidence about a system through test and translating it into evaluated conclusions about performance, effectiveness, and suitability. The "E" is the half that distinguishes the discipline from just running tests: data means nothing until evaluated against what the system is supposed to accomplish.
