Alternative Systems Review
What it actually means
An early technical review confirming that the preferred system concept — usually coming out of an analysis of alternatives — can plausibly satisfy the capability need at acceptable risk, and that the requirements are mature enough to proceed. It's the first gate in the classic chain of technical reviews that runs through SRR, PDR, and CDR.

Pre-Milestone A technical review schedules; more common in DoD than commercial practice.
